Yading: The Last Shangri-La of Sichuan
Yading Nature Reserve, in southern Sichuan's Daocheng County, is often called "the last Shangri-La." Its three sacred snow mountains — Chenresig (Avalokitesvara), Jambeyang (Manjusri), and Chanadorje (Vajrapani) — rise over 6,000 meters, towering above alpine meadows, crystal lakes, and virgin forests. For Tibetan Buddhists, this is hallowed ground; for trekkers, it is one of China's most rewarding destinations.
The Three Sacred Mountains
The three peaks, known collectively as the "Three Guardian Deities," are revered by Tibetans as the embodiment of Buddhist bodhisattvas. Chenresig (6,032m) is the most accessible, with pilgrimage routes circling its base. Jambeyang (5,958m) is considered the most beautiful, its pyramid shape perfectly proportioned. Chanadorje (5,958m) is the most remote. Pilgrims undertake a three-day kora (circumambulation) around the mountains, passing waterfalls, glaciers, and high passes.
Admission and Logistics
Yading requires advance planning. Visitors must first reach Daocheng Yading Airport (the world's highest civilian airport at 4,411m) or drive overland from Chengdu (a 2-day journey). From the gateway town of Shangri-La (not to be confused with the town in Yunnan), shuttle buses enter the reserve. Altitude sickness is a real concern; acclimatization days are recommended.
Pearl Lake and Milk Lake
Two high-altitude lakes are the most popular destinations within Yading. Pearl Lake (Zhenzhu Hu) sits at 3,950m beneath Chenresig, its turquoise waters perfectly reflecting the snow peak. Milk Lake (Niunai Hai) at 4,500m is named for its milky-white color, caused by glacial minerals. Reaching Milk Lake requires a strenuous hike or horse ride; the altitude makes every step an effort.
Tibetan Culture
Yading lies in the Kham Tibetan region. The local people are semi-nomadic herders who move between valley villages and high pastures. Mani walls, prayer flags, and chortens (stupas) dot the landscape. The architecture features flat-roofed stone houses and gilded temple roofs. Visitors can stay in basic guesthouses or bring camping gear.
Hiking Routes
The main trekking route, the Chenresig Kora, takes 1–3 days depending on pace and direction. The full circuit passes the 4,700m Chonggu Temple, crosses multiple high passes, and offers continuous mountain views. Shorter walks lead to the lakes and meadows. Horses can be hired for part or all of the route.
Biodiversity
Yading is a biodiversity hotspot. It protects primary forests of spruce, fir, and birch; alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers; and wildlife including white-lipped deer, blue sheep, and occasional snow leopards. Over 300 bird species have been recorded. The combination of dramatic scenery and ecological richness makes Yading a naturalist's paradise.
Best Time to Visit
The best season is September to October, when skies are clear, fall foliage colors the forests, and the mountains are dusted with fresh snow. Spring (May-June) brings rhododendron blooms. Summer is rainy but lush; winter is harsh and many facilities close.
