The Silk Road Begins at Home: Sericulture and the Chinese Art of Silk Making
The story of silk begins with a caterpillar. The bombyx mori — the domestic silk moth — is, in its wild state, a small, unremarkable brown moth native to the northern China region. Somewhere between 6,000 and 3,000 years ago, Chinese farmers began cultivating it in earnest, selecting for the largest, whitest, most productive cocoons over generations, until the domesticated bombyx mori became entirely dependent on humans for survival. It can no longer fly. It can barely crawl. It exists entirely because we breed it to exist. That dependency — that secret — was the most valuable biological information in the ancient world.
The Origins: A Neolithic Discovery
Archaeological evidence for early silk cultivation is indirect but compelling. The earliest known silk fabric fragments were found in the Yangshao culture sites in Xia County, Shanxi Province, dating to approximately 4,500 BC — making Chinese sericulture at least 6,500 years old. More solid evidence comes from the Shandong Province site of Qianwan, where silk fabric was found alongside Yangshao pottery dating to approximately 3,000 BC. By the time of the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC), silk production was sufficiently established that silk fragments appear in oracle bone inscriptions — tax records listing silk payments in grain, along with cattle and bronze — and the earliest Chinese character for silk (丝, si) was already in use.
The legend of Leizu (嫘祖), the 'Silk Empress' and wife of the Yellow Emperor, who is traditionally credited with introducing sericulture to the Chinese people, dates from the Han Dynasty — it is more mythology than history — but it captures something real: silk production in early China was associated with royal patronage and the imperial household, and that association lasted for over 3,000 years.
By the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 AD), Chinese silk production had become systematised and efficient enough to support both domestic consumption and a substantial export trade. The Silk Road was already well established, carrying silk westwards along the Central Asian trade routes to Rome, Constantinople, and the Persian Gulf.

The Sericulture Cycle: Forty Days of Transformation
The silk moth's life cycle — egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (cocoon), adult — takes approximately 40 to 45 days from hatching to emergence. During the larval stage, which lasts about 25 days, the caterpillar consumes enormous quantities of mulberry leaves — a single silkworm will eat approximately 30 grams of mulberry leaves and increase in body weight by 10,000 times before spinning its cocoon. The quality of the mulberry leaves directly affects the quality of the silk: early-morning leaves, picked before the sun evaporates their moisture, are considered superior.
When the larva is ready to pupate, it begins spinning a continuous thread of raw silk — a protein fiber secreted by two glands in its head — wrapping itself in a cocoon of between 600 and 900 metres of continuous thread. The spinning process takes approximately two to three days. To harvest the silk, the cocoons are heated in boiling water or exposed to steam, killing the pupa inside and loosening the continuous thread so that it can be unwound in a process called reeling.
A single raw silk thread is too fine for most weaving applications. Between four and eight individual cocoon threads are combined through a process called 'doubling' or 'throwing' to produce a usable weaving thread. The thread is then treated with a sericin coating (from the gum that holds the cocoon fibers together) and prepared for the loom.
The Loom: From Backstrap to Jacquard
Chinese silk weaving developed through several technological stages. The earliest technique was the backstrap loom — a simple frame in which one end of the warp threads is tied to a stationary point and the other to the weaver's body — used from the Neolithic period through the Han Dynasty. This method produced simple plain-weave fabrics, though skilled weavers could achieve remarkable complexity.
The drawloom, introduced from Central Asia during the Han Dynasty, allowed for more complex patterned weaving by raising specific groups of warp threads. By the Tang Dynasty, Chinese drawloom technology had advanced to the point that multi-colour brocade weaving was a major industry, with centres in Chengdu, Suzhou, and Chang'an producing the famous brocade fabrics — the word 'brocade' itself comes from the Italian broccato, borrowed from the Chinese.
The most transformative development was the Jacquard loom attachment, developed in France in 1804 and rapidly adopted in Chinese silk-weaving centres from the 1840s. The Jacquard mechanism — using punch cards to control which warp threads are raised — allowed for the automated production of highly complex pictorial designs, revolutionising silk textile production globally.
The Tang Dynasty: Silk as Currency and Culture
The Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) was silk's golden age. Silk was not merely a luxury fabric — it functioned as currency. Tang government officials received part of their salaries in bolts of silk; the Silk Road trade was denominated in silk; and the imperial court used silk as diplomatic gifts to establish political relationships with Central Asian states, Tibetan kingdoms, and the Korean and Japanese kingdoms. Chang'an, the Tang capital, housed large silk markets where merchants from Central Asia, Persia, and the Byzantine Empire traded for Chinese silk fabrics, raw silk, and silkworm eggs.
The Tang also saw the development of specific regional silk traditions: Chengdu in Sichuan became the centre of Shu brocade (蜀锦) production; Suzhou in Jiangsu developed its distinctive Suzhou silk weaving; and Nanjing, under the Ming Dynasty, would later establish the famous Yunjin (云锦) brocade tradition — still alive today as a UNESCO-listed intangible heritage, with a history of over 1,600 years.
Silk Today: A Craft Under Pressure
Chinese silk production today is a fraction of its historical scale, but it remains a significant industry. Zhejiang Province is the largest silk-producing region, with Hangzhou as the traditional centre. Suzhou's Tiger Hill Silk Factory still produces hand-woven silk using traditional techniques, and the craft of silk preparation — from cocoon sorting to thread throwing — is maintained as a living intangible heritage by a shrinking number of practitioners, most of them over 60 years old.
Internationally, Chinese silk artists have achieved recognition in the luxury fashion market, and Chinese silk home textiles (bedding, curtains) have become a significant export category, valued for their comfort properties and cultural associations.
