White as Jade, Thin as Paper: Jingdezhen and the Art That Changed World Trade

In 1602, the Dutch East India Company captured a Portuguese ship carrying a cargo of Chinese porcelain. The shipment was so valuable — so coveted — that the Dutch sold the porcelain at auction for a sum equivalent to the entire annual revenue of the Dutch Republic. The VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) had found its most profitable trade good, and the cargo had come from a city in the mountains of Jiangxi Province that had been making porcelain since the Han Dynasty. The city's name was Jingdezhen, and its product was so important to world history that the city was renamed after the reign title of an emperor — a unique honour in Chinese history.

Origins: Where the Clay Meets the Fire

Porcelain production in Jingdezhen began during the Five Dynasties period (907–960 AD), when local potters discovered that the kaolin clay found in the highlands east of the city had exceptional properties for ceramic production: high plasticity when wet, high refractoriness when fired, and a near-white colour when processed. This combination of raw materials — kaolin (高岭土, gaolingtu) and porcelain stone (瓷石, cishi) — allowed Jingdezhen's potters to fire vessels at temperatures above 1,300°C, producing a body that was simultaneously translucent, white, and extremely durable.

During the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD), Jingdezhen developed its distinctive classical styles: the Ru ware (汝窑) of the Northern Song period, known for its sky-blue glaze with a fine crackle pattern, was so highly prized that fewer than 100 authenticated examples survive. The Ding ware (定窑) produced thin-walled white porcelain that was traded throughout East and Southeast Asia, with archaeological finds of Ding ware shards on shipwrecks throughout the South China Sea.

The Imperial Factory and the Blue-and-White Revolution

Jingdezhen's transformation into the world's porcelain capital was cemented by the Ming Dynasty's decision to establish an Imperial Porcelain Factory (御窑厂, Yuyaochang) in the city. From 1369, during the reign of the Hongwu Emperor (founder of the Ming), imperial kilns were operated under direct government supervision, producing ceramic ware exclusively for the imperial court and for diplomatic gifts. The scale of the operation was extraordinary: at its peak in the late Ming, the imperial kilns employed over 1,000 potters and produced an estimated 100,000 pieces annually.

The most significant development of the Ming Dynasty was the perfection of blue-and-white porcelain (青花瓷, qinghua ci) — white porcelain painted with cobalt blue pigment derived from imported Persian cobalt ore, fired at high temperature to produce a vivid blue image on a translucent white ground. The cobalt blue — known as 'Mohammedan blue' for its Middle Eastern origin — produced colours ranging from deep indigo to pale sky blue, with the characteristic iron 'spotting' that gives Ming blue-and-white its characteristic texture. The Yongle Emperor's reign (1402–1424) produced the finest Ming blue-and-white, and Yongle-period pieces are among the most valuable ceramics ever sold at auction.

The Seven Processes of Jingdezhen

Traditional Jingdezhen porcelain production involves seven principal processes, each requiring specialised skill:

  1. Ore dressing (选矿): Selecting and processing the raw kaolin and porcelain stone to remove impurities.
  2. Body preparation (练泥): Kneading the processed clay into a workable, air-free consistency.
  3. Throwing (拉坯): Shaping the vessel on the potter's wheel. Jingdezhen throwers can produce vessels of extraordinary thinness, requiring years of apprenticeship.
  4. Trimming and drying (修坯): Refining the shape and allowing controlled drying.
  5. Painting (彩绘): Applying decorative designs by hand, using traditional motifs (dragons, phoenixes, landscape scenes, flowers) and the cobalt blue pigment.
  6. Glazing (上釉): Applying the transparent or coloured glaze that gives porcelain its characteristic surface quality.
  7. Firing (烧成): Firing in large dragon kilns (龙窑) or cross-draft kilns at temperatures of 1,280–1,320°C. A single kiln firing can last 48–72 hours.

Jingdezhen Today: From Imperial Kilns to Art Studios

The imperial kilns ceased production in 1911 with the fall of the Qing Dynasty, but the city has continued producing porcelain continuously. In the 1990s and 2000s, Jingdezhen underwent a transformation driven by the Chinese art market: prices for Ming and Qing imperial porcelain at auction reached record levels, generating resources for a new generation of Jingdezhen ceramic artists. Contemporary Jingdezhen has become a centre for experimental ceramic art, with hundreds of independent studios — some led by third-generation pottery families, others by young artists from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing — producing work that ranges from faithful reproductions of historical styles to radical contemporary ceramic sculpture.

The Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Biennale, established in 2015, showcases contemporary ceramic work from around the world in the historic imperial kiln district, using the physical infrastructure of the Qing Dynasty imperial factory as its exhibition venue — a striking example of cultural heritage repurposed as contemporary art space.

In 2006, the Jingdezhen traditional porcelain firing techniques were listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage item, and in 2019, Jingdezhen was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognising the historic urban landscape of the imperial kiln district and the surrounding ancient ceramic production infrastructure.
