Traditional Chinese dress, clothing, and textile arts (中国传统服饰) encompass a sophisticated tradition of garments, adornments, and textile production that evolved over five thousand years — from the silk robes of the Shang Dynasty to the dragon robes of the Qing emperor, from the flowing hanfu of the Han to the changshan and qipao of later periods, Chinese dress developed distinctive forms, colors, and symbolic systems that expressed social status, cultural identity, regional identity, and aesthetic values. Chinese textiles, especially silk, were among the most prized luxury goods in world history.
Historical Development of Chinese Dress
Chinese dress evolved through major periods: the "Shang and Zhou" (商周) — the basic robe (深衣) wrapping left over right; the "Han Dynasty" (汉代) — the hanfu (汉服) with cross-collar and sash, the definitive Chinese garment; the "Tang Dynasty" (唐代) — cosmopolitan fashion with Central Asian and Persian influences, colorful and ornate; the "Song Dynasty" (宋代) — the preference for elegance and restraint, with blue and green hues; the "Yuan Dynasty" (元代) — Mongol riding costumes influencing Chinese dress; the "Ming Dynasty" (明代) — the return to Han traditions with distinctive palace styles; the "Qing Dynasty" (清代) — Manchu influence with the magua (马褂) jacket and qipao (旗袍); and the " Republic era" (民国) — the shift to Western-style clothing for men, the modernized qipao for women. The robe-based system persisted for over three millennia.
Silk and Textile Production
China was the world's sole silk producer for centuries: the "sericulture" (养蚕) — raising silkworms on mulberry leaves, a closely guarded secret; the "reeling and weaving" (缫丝织绸) — the meticulous process producing silk thread and fabric; the "warp and weft" (经纬) — the basic weaving structure of all Chinese textiles; the "damask and brocade" (锦缎) — elaborate patterned silks for court and elite; the "embroidery" (刺绣) — Suzhou (苏绣), Hunan (湘绣), Guangdong (粤绣), Sichuan (蜀绣) as the four great regional traditions; the "nuan liang" (暖凉) — seasonal silks for different times of year; the "pattern symbolism" (纹样寓意) — dragons, phoenixes, cranes, clouds, and water patterns with specific meanings; and the "kite cloth and gauze" (纱罗) — open-weave fabrics for summer. The Silk Road was named for silk as the most famous Chinese export.
Colors, Ornaments, and Status
Chinese dress communicated status through: the "color hierarchy" (色彩等级) — yellow (明黄) reserved for the emperor, imperial yellow (正黄) for princes, red and purple for officials; the "badges of rank" (补服) — square embroidered insignia on Ming and Qing official robes indicating rank; the "dragon robe" (龙袍) — the imperial robe with the nine-dragon motif; the "mandarin square" (官补) — the rank badge worn on the chest; the "bamboo hat and蓑衣" (斗笠) — rain gear of commoners; the "footwear" (鞋履) — silk embroidered shoes, cloth shoes, and wooden clogs; the "headwear" (冠帽) — the guan (冠) for men, hairpins (簪) for women; the "jewelry" (首饰) — jade ornaments, gold hairpins, and pearl strings; and the "belt ornaments" (带饰) — jade pendants and buckle ornaments. Full dress varied enormously between court, official, scholar, merchant, and peasant classes.
